If you don’t believe in global warming, just quit reading now..
I’ve lived in Virginia since I was three years old (I was three in 1966) I don’t ever remember a warmer December than the one we just went through. On the one hand (being that I hate cold weather), I am really enjoying an average daily temp in the mid 50’s -60. It’s great for getting out on the bike or dropping in at the YMCA skatepark. On the other hand, my daughter ran up to me this morning to tell me we have carrots coming up in the front yard. The carrots turned out to be tulip bulbs that don’t know its still December and they should be getting their beauty sleep for looking good in the spring.
I’ll be interested to see what the next few months will be like. We haven’t had winter yet, will it come this year?

Click here to take the Superhero Personality Quiz
The old school html 3.2 it generates makes me sad though.

I was working on exporting a Flash/Yahoo maps project into Flex. Everything was going fine until I noticed some weirdness with an asfunction in the imported Flash movie not firing off consistently. After some testing I found that the asfunction will fire off every time *until* I set focus to any component inside of the Flex app. If I touch any component inside Flex first, the asfunction won’t fire off at all. At that point, the asfunction will not fire again until either a) I refresh the page, b) I click my mouse on the page anywhere outside the Flex app and even then you have to click once to set focus to the Flash movie and again to fire off the event.
Here’s a fun example (and you need FP9 to have fun).
First click the text (that’s in the Flash movie). The Alert pops up and you could do that all day if you wanted to. Next press the button at the bottom. That button is in Flex. Now click the text again. Nothing happens until you click somewhere on the page outside of the Flex app.
Any Ideas?

If you load a swf into a Flex app, Flex refers to the swf’s main time line as ‘_root’.
I have an asfunction call in some text inside my swf. This works when the swf is embeded in a page but not called into Flex:
"asfunction:_level0.showStateAndZoom, address"
This works in Flex:
"asfunction:_root.showStateAndZoom, address"
Using ‘_root’ just seems wrong and so Flash 5. ;)

My wife feeds the squirrels that live in our backyard. Tons of them. I’ve always ignored them. Yesterday, I saw a squirrel on the rail of our back deck and thought, “I’ll put some nuts out for the squirrels.”, Stupid me. I take a a handful of pecans and go to put them on the railing and the squirrel jumps over (while I’m putting the nuts down) and BITES my finger. Dang that hurt. It didn’t hurt as much as the pain of being stupid but it hurt. Long story short, I go to the local doc-in-a-box they file a report for animal control and tell me I don’t have to get a rabies shot since there has not been a reported case of a squirrel passing rabies in the last six years. So at least no rabies shot. I’m still pissed at the squirrels though, no more food for you. Maybe I’ll buy a bb gun.

Well my old server finally bit the dust. So with a new server home I decided to move over to Wordpress. Hope fully a blog that doesn’t look like ass will give me the incentive to post more. I’ve swamped in Flex projects for the last few months. Hopefully I’ll get the time to post some code samples of the work I’ve been doing.
